Last week, we discussed the five traits of an authentic leader, where we talked about what authentic leadership really means, and how to recruit authentic leaders for long-term success. This week, we are going to break down the three behaviors of an inclusive leader and how to be one, specifically in the real estate industry.

What is Inclusive Leadership?

The inclusive leadership definition, according to the Center for Creative Leadership, is a leader who commits to ensuring all team members are treated equitably, feel a sense of belonging and value, and have the resources and support they need to achieve their full potential. These types of leaders often carry the following three traits: Self Awareness, Cultural Intelligence, and Rewarding of Courageous Leadership.

3 Traits of Inclusive Leadership

1. Self awareness

It is critically important for leaders to be self-aware and identify, understand, recognize, and correct their own biases, as explained by the American Bar Association. Leaders are people, just like anyone else. The difference is that true inclusive leaders are aware of the beliefs they were taught and had absorbed in their youth by unconscious bias, then work to recognize these biases and adjust their beliefs to better understand race, gender, etc. that may not be familiar.

2. Cultural Intelligence

Not everyone sees the world through the same cultural frame, but inclusive leaders do. There are three elements to cultural intelligence held by inclusive leaders: Drive, knowledge, and adaptability. Cultural intelligence and these elements are appreciated, but also have been shown to convert to profitable business outcomes, such as increased job performance by employees, intercultural negotiation effectiveness, and multicultural team achievements.

3. Rewarding of Courageous Leadership

Rewards and recognition are tools used by a variety of leaders who model inclusive leadership traits. Talking about one’s imperfections involves personal risk-taking and can do more harm for the individual than good. This is why courageous leaders must be rewarded for their commitment to role-model inclusive behaviors and display non-biased behavior to set an example for inclusivity in the workplace.

How to be An Inclusive Leader in Real Estate

In the real estate industry, it is necessary to collaborate with other real estate professionals in order to get a deal done. However, an agent or broker can still remain solo in their lane to get what he or she needs to get done while remaining off-putting to those around them. It is imperative that we remember collaboration as a benefit, not an inconvenience. In Six Signature Traits of Inclusive Leadership, Deloitte cites collaboration as one of the six signature traits, because a diverse-thinking team is greater than the sum of its parts. Not to mention it is 2021; inclusivity of all ethnicities, genders, social classes, etc. is expected.
