How to Build a Fully Engaged Workforce

If you’re a business owner reading this article and you find yourself asking “Are my employees actually engaged in their work?”, then you’re in the right place.

According to Forbes, employees who are engaged in their work are more likely to be motivated and remain committed to their employer.

Employee engagement is, of course, important to a company’s success, but just how important? Well, it is certainly necessary for retaining valuable employees who complete the puzzle of a successful business. So, how do you build a fully engaged workforce? We lay out how to do that in the steps below.

Know what you want from your team

What do you need from your team so that the company’s goals and objectives are met? What are the key results you need from each team member? It’s simple. Be specific. Too often job descriptions are skill-based without success markers. The job description should be a roadmap that communicates your company’s mission, goals and objectives. The description should outline competencies and tasks that lead to desired outcomes.

Find opportunity

Attract team members who view challenges as opportunities, not roadblocks. In order to attract this type of workforce, you must be this type of leader in your own life, and in business. Your team will follow your example. So, be the example of someone who is open-minded, innovative, inspiring, and driven toward success. Observe your current high-performing team members. What characteristics do they demonstrate consistently that inform their work and success? Hire opportunity seekers who don’t limit themselves. This will enhance their contribution and the overall team and company outcomes.

Create a culture of performance

Ensure that you know what success looks like, so you can effectively communicate it to the team. Then, coach each team member to create a path for personal and professional development within the organization and their lives. Require their participation in planning the company’s success, and help them create a vision for their personal success, as well. For example, one client incorporated this process and learned that one of their junior staff members hopes to own her own real estate brokerage firm in the future. Her commitment to high standards now will pay big dividends when she opens her own brokerage firm. Helping employees understand how their current commitment is an investment in the future will result in a happier and higher functioning team.

Encourage daily habits

Consistency is key. Create habits within your team that produce cohesion, collaboration and measurable results. Sales teams usually have daily set calls to remind each member team goals and to report wins and challenges. Set a structure where people thrive on reaching goals. Key performance indicators measure the tasks that lead to desired outcomes. Setting key performance indicators increase the likelihood of reaching the goals and objectives.

Frequent communication with the team members is also important to keep the company and team vision, alignment and execution on track. At Roos Advisors, we believe it is always about people, process, and products. When the right people are engaged in effective processes, quality products and services are more likely. Contribution is a natural outgrowth of engaged teams. Setting daily goals and acknowledging accomplishments at the end of the day help with team cohesion and consistent alignment.

How do you encourage these daily habits? Ask yourself these questions at the beginning and the end of your workday:

  • What are my top three goals for today?
  • What is the most impactful thing I can do today to improve my personal performance?
  • What is the most impactful thing I can do today to contribute to the overall success of the company?
  • What was my greatest accomplishment today?
  • What was my obstacle?
  • Who can help me work through this obstacle?
